The Rural Share of Deprivation in the South-East

This project was commissioned by Government Office South-East

Welcome to the website for the "Rural Share of Deprivation in the South-East" project

Introduction

The Government Office South-East (GOSE) Rural Evidence Group commissioned this project to further develop the evidence base on rural deprivation:

  • Developing comparable region-wide data identifying the “rural share of deprivation” – in other words how many deprived people live in rural areas, based on a number of key indicators
  • Providing the “rural share of deprivation” data at County and District level across the region
  • Mapping the key indicators at small area level

This systematic comparison between urban and rural areas across the region is intended to provide evidence to support rural programme funding, for both regional and local partners. All the datasets, reports and maps developed for this project are available on this website.

The project was carried out by Oxford Consultants for Social Inclusion (OCSI), and builds on a scoping report carried out by OCSI in 2006. Version 2 of the datasets and reports was published in August 2007 to correct errors in the Economic Indicators table.
